We <3 Robots!

The Short Circuits is a team from City Charter High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. We compete in the FIRST® Robotics Competition, a competition that challenges high school students from all over the world to create a fully functional robot in 6 weeks. We try to spread the spirit of FIRST throughout our school and community.
"I can count on them to show up with a working robot, with many students in their signature pink t-shirts, and with enthusiastic support for FIRST." - Patricia DePra, Regional Director
We are part of the Steel City Robotics Alliance (www.steelcityrobotics.org).

Onwards and Upwards

In these weeks following the Pittsburgh Regional, FIRST Team 1743 has been silently making progress towards reorganization. While most of the team has been suffering from Robotics Withdraw, a serious condition affecting many FIRST teams post competition, we have had a final bake sale and watching footage from the competition, reliving some of our moments. We are planning to do a few field trips to places over the break, including possibly a stay at the Carnegie Science Center, among other things. Although we didn’t appear to do that well, we felt we had a successful year, accomplishing everything we had set out to do. We didn’t have any major problems when it came to building and marketing. We can’t wait until the next season! Meanwhile, we’ll keep spreading the FIRST spirit!

Getting Close to Competition!

Wow! You can really feel the energy increasing around FIRST Team 1743′s headquarters as the countdown to the regional gets closer to zero. Drivers are coming up with strategies and perfecting their skills on the sticks with a prototype robot. The shop is slowing becoming more and more organized. Marketing is creating buttons like a mad man.

Meanwhile, here is a haiku to keep the blood flowing and the inspiration going.

Welcome to Pittsburgh
Another year for robots
to take the FIRST field

FIRST Team 1743 visits CMU

On Tuesday, March 1st, FIRST Team 1743 took a downtown bus to the Oakland community, where we visited part of the robotics program at Carnegie Mellon University. We were first introduced to their Robosecretary, a multitasking computer that answers phones and acts as a quick guide for visitors. Afterwards, we saw many cool robots there, including cranes, cave explorers, boats and submarines, and even ones capable of space exploration! As Matt Aasted, a PhD candidate said: It’s more than building, it’s about innovation. FIRST Team 1743 would like to thank Matt and Carnegie Mellon University for having us and Lynnetta Miller from the CMU Robotics Institute and Sam Kherat, our Caterpillar sponsor for setting us up!

jcpenney, Robinson Mall, and Mascot Dance-offs

A lot of fun was had on Saturday, February 26th! We supported jcpenney, a proud sponsor of FIRST Team 1743 and robotics by spreading our enthusiasm about what we do.

There was even a mascot dance-off!

Pink the Petersen!

On February 19, 2011, several of the Robotics and Pearls members participated in ‘Pink the Petersen’. Pink the Petersen was a Pitt women’s basketball game supporting breast cancer. Supporting my graduation project, Pink the Petersen was my Action Plan and many people helped out supporting my topic of breast cancer awareness. Everyone created a ‘sea of pink’ throughout the area of the Petersen Events Center. I created my own activities that included flyers about a little girl who had breast cancer at the age of 3 and selling bracelets that turned out to be a huge hit to be donated to Susan G. Komen. Thank you for everyone that supported breast cancer and my graduation project!

Carnegie Science Center Visit

Katie and Jasmine (at right of image) volunteer at the Carnegie Science Center

On Friday, February 18, 2011, Katie Barvilchak and Jasmine Johnson of FIRST Team 1743 volunteered at the Carnegie Science Center as representatives for the FIRST regional competition. We introduced children to the world of Alice programming and FIRST robotics. We also had a coloring activity for the younger children. From this experience, they got the chance to spread the FIRST mission.
